Meet Trevor Sloat

Although this site is a work in progress, there is work being done! Many thanks are owed to Trevor Sloat, a local grad student with a passion for brunching that only kindred spirits share. After stumbling on this site, he took it upon himself to contact us about contributing his own vast knowledge of brunch on the western front (read: Nassau!) and naturally, we were more than happy to add some of his hometown, off the eastern Island-radar favorites to the Long Island Brunch Project.

Thanks to him, we’ve now got Long Beach gems like Billy’s Beach Cafe, Brixx & Barley, The Cabana, Whale’s Tale, and Jetty on the Nassau list (among others), plus Lynbrook’s McQuade’s Neighborhood Grill, Fisherman’s Catch in Point Lookout, and details on the lowest key, unexpected brunch in Bay Shore, at Kumo’s.

“There’s nothing like a bottomless brunch in my hometown of Long Beach, so I wanted to share some of my southern Nassau knowledge.”

He’d been thinking about putting together a resource like this, and being that great (and hungry) minds think alike, we’re looking forward to collaborating with him as he lends his boozy brunch expertise to the Project.

Trevor has put on the record: “I’m an avid brunch goer … [it’s] a great way for me and my friends to have a great time, enjoy some drinks while budgeting, and getting the best ‘bang for your buck.’ I’ve essentially replaced my Saturday nights for Sunday [afternoons], and brunching for football Sundays or beautiful summer days is definitely the preferred option for my whole group now!”

Clearly, brunch is a meal for everyone, and with Trevor’s help, the Long Island Brunch Project is about to expand your options even more.

Monsoon Chicken and Waffles

“Love Bites” Singles Party Brunch at Monsoon

Who needs a date for Valentine’s Day weekend when you can brunch with the best of Long Island’s singles at trendy Monsoon Steak & Sushi? Two seatings–11:30 AM and 1:30 PM–let you sleep in as late as you like before getting a move on. Tunes will be spun by Decoy and the $35 prix fixe menu includes bottomless mimosas and sangrias for your two-hour seating. If you want to continue the party after the official brunch hours, half-priced mimosas and sangrias at the bar make it easy.

Reservations are needed, so call 631.587.4400 to get in on this. This restaurant doesn’t usually serve brunch, so this is a great opportunity to try something new. After all, how many other Asian restaurants offer breakfasty bites?

On top of assorted pastries, menu highlights include favorite comfort foods with a slightly Asian twist:

  • Korean fried chicken (!) and Belgian waffles with maple gastrique
  • Savory vegetable omelettes with shiitake mushrooms, spinach, tomato and chives
  • Roasted chicken chef’s salad, chock full of avocado, hard-boiled eggs, chopped applewood-smoked bacon, and topped with ginger dressing
  • Monsoon Burger with a grilled tomato, pickled cucumbers (mmm, addicted to these from the Peking duck dish!), smoked Gruyere cheese, and “Asian fries”
  • Breakfast fried rice with bacon, ham, egg, cheese, and scallions
  • Seared dry-aged skirt steak with scrambled eggs ($10 additional)

That’s not to say classics aren’t on the menu as well. Case in point:

  • Banana or chocolate chip pancakes
  • Nutella French toast with berry compote

Tip: This meal can’t be combined with any promotions or complimentary cards. And as with any meal, anticipate adding tax and gratuity to your bill.

Review: Bistro Cassis

The Scene

Charmant. It’s the best and only way to describe the first impression of this Parisian nook in Huntington’s downtown area. From the red awning that pops from the sidewalk, marble-treated bistro tables, warm yellow walls, soft globe lighting, and retro French art on the walls, every detail is cozy and European-reminiscent.

Black aprons on the servers, mustard in jars with tiny spoons, cozy banquette or dark wooden chairs for seating, and a tiny but serviceable bar in a narrow space further added to an urban sophistication far more suited to Brooklyn than Long Island. An upscale but mixed group of diners–from families with children to groups celebrating occasions to friend-dates and real dates–also solidified the “not in Kansas anymore” city feel. Romantic, cozy, and traditional in a chic but not ironic way, the fact that the brunch menu included a mimosa or Bloody Mary, plus coffee or tea and starter pastries, put it on the fast track for a home run.

Review: Pure North Fork

The Scene

Hidden inside the Great Rock Golf Club and in Wading River and not actually on the North Fork, it’s no wonder that this restaurant is up against odds when it comes to generating awareness of the venue. (There were only two other tables dining during our noon seating on this particular Sunday.) Driving through the gated entrance, it feels like a typical community development. A few seconds in and the restaurant signage points you left. Easy-peasey.

A spacious parking lot and short walk into the main building meant a speedier start to the brunch experience. A contemporary Hyatt-like decor (I took several pictures of the beautiful, modern setting that were unfortunately wiped out from my DSLR camera, and more’s the shame!) set a scene that was very stylishly New American, despite being a tad impersonal.

It took mere seconds to be seated at a lovely table flooded with natural sunlight and overlooking a meticulously groomed hole on the golf course, and not much longer to receive our menus and have water poured. And so it began.

5 Brothers Chicken & Waffles Opens

This doesn’t quite fit into the cozy, loungey brunch criteria, but for those who could use a quick fix of chicken and waffles at any given time, there’s a new bodega-style take-out spot in Patchogue now specializing in–you guessed it!–chicken and waffles.

There’s no website, but there are already plenty of photos on their claimed Yelp page, including pictures of the menu and item prices. The prices are low, but the menu is definitely more skewed toward deep-fried diner comfort food … perfect for the wee hours that they’re open until.

Acacia in Huntington Introduces the “Party Brunch” Concept

Not an early riser? No worries — Acacia in Huntington has you covered on those SUPER lazy Sundays where #thestruggleisreal when it comes to getting out of bed. They’re doing “party brunches” that don’t start until 2 PM. Only two seatings are available; 4 PM is the second one.

A live DJ will be sure to wake you up to continue your Saturday night vibes, and an hour of complimentary bellinis and mimosas take the edge off, too.

More Than Just Biscuits

On Jamesport’s Main Road, the highly anticipated Main Road Biscuit Co. has unofficially opened, with customers already lining up at the door within its first week, coming “in droves,” according to the humbly wonderstruck owner Marissa Drago and executive chef Vincent Purcell.

Media buzz has been non-stop since the soft open took place, with community outlets like Riverhead Local and North Fork Patch quick to report, and more regional publications like Newsday and soon, Edible East End (link to follow upon article posting) hot on their tails.

NorthForker covered the preview as long ago as June, starting the hype.

Obviously, the sky-high buttermilk biscuits–nicely dense, not crumbly, nor greasy; a sturdy base for all things delicious–are a focal point, but other things to get excited about seem to be:

  • Grandma’s Pancakes – a recipe for Belgian-style pancakes developed by co-owner Bryan Drago’s actual grandma, topped with seasonal combinations. For the opening, we’re looking at local apple, bourbon, and maple.
  • Chicken & Biscuit Sandwich – high-risen biscuit topped with panko-crusted fried chicken with housemade pickles and dripping with honey butter.
  • Lemon & Orange Marmalade– generous slices of syrupy fruit and creamy butter make a decadent topping.
  • Salted Corner Brownie Cookies – the light dusting of sea salt is clutch with these crispety yet chewy, richly milk chocolate/fudge-tasting thick cookies.
  • Whole-Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies – the size of your open hand, these thinner, crispy cookies have a sugar topping that make it a lovely cross between traditional CCCs and a sugar cookie.
  • North Fork Roasting Co. Coffee – because yes, we love local!
  • Salads & Specials – determined by seasonality and the produce yield from nearby farms; this is farm-to-table dining, so anything can come out of that kitchen!

Upon its grand opening, they’ll be working on “rolling out” biscuits and gravy and biscuit doughnuts.

$20 Breakfast Crawl This Weekend in Patchogue

According to GreaterPatchogue.com, tickets are still available for the Patchogue Breakfast Crawl set for this Saturday, October 8! It’s only $20 to have breakfast at five venues, or $50 to try all nine and dessert at Kilwins. Tickets are sold through the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce for this event, which takes place between 9 AM and noon. Last-minute tickets might still be available for in-person purchase the day of the event at the Patchogue Theater on Main Street.

Participating restaurants are as follows:
